Restaurants in Cape Breton

Nova Scotia has a world wide reputation for its fabulous lobster, which you'll get served freshly local all year round. The exquisite Snow Crabs, mostly caught in the waters around Cheticamp in Cape Breton Island are internationally appreciated as delicacy as well.

In the past Cape Breton was never a gastronomical hotspot for gourmets. Most local restaurants have standart menues like Burgers or Fish & Chips (which are mostly tasting quite good), but the passionate foodie was at quite a loss. In the last couple of years there is a trend emerging on Cape Breton Island, inspired by the worldwide Pop-Up Restaurant movement and the hipp Underground Supper Clubs. Eating as a social event, in a special ambience with inventive and marvelous menues. Small venues with limited seating and a kitchen inspired by regional resources and phantastic menue creations attract more and more customers. It is in particular worth to mention the BITE HOUSE which is sold out for the season at the beginning of the year. Whoever tries to get hold of one of the 12 available spots in this unique farmhouse restaurant needs to plan long ahead or has to be very quick.

Another trend is to observe in all the small local breweries, shooting up all over Nova Scotia, brewing high quality beers. The local Liquor Stores (NSLC) offer quite a lot of these tiny brands, who distinguish themselves from others with colourful and creative labels.

The Bite House in Baddeck

We haven't made it to the Bite House in person yet, but heard a lot about this extraordinary little Foodie Restaurant. It seats only 12 persons and these are in such high demand that reservations for the summer must be made far ahead of time at the beginning of the year. Chef Brian Picard creates an elusively menue with the best local ingredients obtained by small local farmers or out of his own garden. An once in a lifetime experience for gourmets.
